한국의 미

  김현철은 진경산수화를 일관되게 그리고 있는 젊은 화가이다. 30-40대의 젊은 화가들이 대부분 현대적인 기법과 유행을 따르는 것에 비하면 전통적인 그림을 추구하는 그의 태도가 자칫 시대에 뒤떨어진 것처럼 보일 수도 있다. 김현철의 그림이 단순히 전통을 재현하는 것에 머물고 있다면 그의 작업은 정당한 평가를 받기 어려울 것이다. 그러나 김현철은 옛선조들의 노력과 성과에 그의 개성을 보태어 독특하고 새로운 그림을 창조해내고 있다. 우리가 김현철의 노력을 높이 평가해야 하는 이유가 여기에 있다.
  진경산수화의 핵심은 중국풍의 그림을 멀리하고 우리나라의 산과 들과 강을 우리의 시선과 철학으로 바라보고 우리만의 독특한 기법으로 그렸다는 것이다. 다시 말하면 중국식 그림과 관념적이 산수화에서 벗어나 우리 산수화의 정체성을 찾았다는 점이다.
  우리의 정서와 한국적이 미학, 그리고 개성이 살아있는 그림. 김현철은 이런 그림을 꿈꾸며 전국의 산과 들, 강을 돌아다닌다. <낙화암>도 이런 노력을 통해 얻은 것이다. 이 그림의 특징은 여백의 미를 잘 살리고 있다는 것이다. 이를테면 강물과 하늘은 색을 칠하지 않았다. 그렇게 함으로써 넓은 하늘과 강의 이미지를 극대화시켰다. 김현철은 여백의 극대화를 통해 실제로 존재하는 공간이지만 사실은 이 세상에 하나밖에 없는 또 다른 <낙화암>을 창조해낸 것이다.
  1958년 경북 김천에서 태어난 김현철은 서울대 미대 회화과와 같은 대학원에서 한국화을 전공했다. 지금까지 3회의 개인전과 20여회의 단체전을 가졌다.

<THE WORLD OF KOREAN BEAUTY>

  Kim Hyun-chul is a young artist who has consistently been painting, Korean mountains and rivers. While most young artists in their 30s and 40s are employing modern and trendy techniques, Kim, who has persistently pursued traditional methods, might appear to be anachronistic. However, if one presumes that he is just trying to paint in the old way, it would be doing an injustice to him. For, he is creating a world of his own by adding a unique touch to the traditional techniques practiced by the masters of the past. Herein lies the reason why many regard his works highly.
  The core of traditional Korean painting is a rejection of Chinese ways of painting and  and a concentration, in stead,  on efforts to recreate Korean mountains, fields and rivers as we see them and with our own techniques. In other words, we are mpw able to shed the influence of the Chinese or conceptual Oriental paintings and established a truly Korean genre of paintings of mountains and rivers.
  Kim Hyun-chul visits mountains, fields and rivers around the country to paint pictures that express the emotions and sense of beauty that are unique to Koreans. His painting, `Nakhwa-am' is part of such efforts. The major characteristic of this painting is the skillful use of blank space. For instance, he does not use any color to show the water of the river or the sky. By doing so, he is able to maximize the feeling of vastness. And thus, he is also able to make `Nakhwa-am' his own.
  Born in Gimchon, Gyongsangbuk-do province in 1958, he studied Korean painting at the Fine Arts Department and in the graduate school of Seoul National University. He has given three private exhibitions and participated in more than 20 group shows.
