<THE WORLD OF KOREAN BEAUTY>

  On looking at a painting by Kim Hyun-chul, we are sure to be reminded of the Joseon-era painter Jeong Seon (professional name Gyeomjae). Jeong Seon (1676-1759) was at first much influenced by the Chinese style of painting, but from the age of about thirty he devoted himself to capturing the unique qualities of the Korean landscape. Because of this quality, Jeong Seon's paintings have come to be distinguished from those of earlier periods by the designation "true view landscapes," True view landscapes do not simply reproduce the scenery of nature, but endow it with aesthetic interest and individuality through a pictorial paradigm shift.
  Kim Hyun-chul is a painter who strives to continue and develop the tradition of the true view landscape. Besides his earnest emulation of the achievements of Jeong Seon and other predecessors, he has a unique creative gift of his own, and this is what makes Kim, Hyun_chul an important artist. The task he has set himself is a re-creation of tradition, a contemporary take on the past. Unlike many young artists with their sensitivity to fashion, Kim approaches his work with convincing sincerity rather than momentary brilliance. His steadfast devotion to the true view landscape speaks softly, yet firmly, of the importance of the past and the beauty of tradition.
  An art that expresses the unique ethos and aesthetics of Korea-this has been Kim Hyun-chul's constant dream as he wanders the mountains, fields, and rivers of the whole country. Eorayeon on the Dinggang River is a product of depicted somewhat precisely, though the density of their coloring is adjusted to create a sense of perspective. The mountains that are closer to the viewpoint are shown darker and more detailed, which are further is made to represent the river, an empty river among tinted mountains. The sky, too, is left empty. This deft composition makes the painting appear three-dimensional, and the whole landscape seems to come to life. Emptiness and fullness, the vertical mountains and the horizontal water and sky: in this painting the natural environment of Korea is born anew.

  Kim,Hyun-chul was born in 1958 in Gimcheon, Gyeongsangbukdo Province. He received both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Korean painting from Seoul National University's College of Art. To date, his work has been displayed in five solo exhibitions and about 40 joint exhibitions.
